Madhu's Block

Hi,

I am giving you the choice of making the block chosen by me, or any other block if the fabric so inspires you!

My choice:

Garden Fence Block

This is a block by Cindy from Hyacinth Quilt Designs. I chose this block because –

It is a very simple block – in case any of the party are new quiltersJ...

It involved no matching of points anywhere

At the same time, it shows off the fabric to perfection.

She has given the pattern for a 10” block here- http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.in/2011/01/garden-fence.html.

Since I wanted a 15” block, I tweaked the dimensions.

Fabric

I have sent you the following fabrics-

1. The `garden’ fabric – approximately 15”X 20” piece .

2. The `fence’ fabric – 6”X 18”

3. Red fabric -6”X 8” –(Not needed for this block – it’s there in case you are inspired to make a different block)

Cutting instructions

All seams quarter inch. The `garden’ centre square is ready at 3”. The other strips are at 2” ready. The `fence’ strips are 1” wide.

Before cutting the strips, you may want to `square the fabric’. (I have not done it)

You need the following strips, beginning from the centre outwards-

Garden Fabric-

1 square - 3.5 X 3.5 ( Remember to cut this first! Very important! When making my practice block, I forgot to cut out the square and cut up the entire fabric into 2.5” stripsL) A

4 strips (squares) – 2.5 X 2.5 B

4 strips – 4.5 X 2.5 C

2 strips – 11.5 X 2.5 D

2 strips - 15.5 X 2.5 E

Fence Fabric

2 strips – 3.5 X 1.5 P

2 strips – 5.5 X 1.5 Q

4 strips ( crossing) – 2.5 X 1.5 R

2 strips - 9.5 X 1.5 S

2 strips - 11.5 X 1.5 T

For the new piecniks , for the most efficient use of fabric – you could follow these instructions

Garden Fabric

1. Along the longer side(20” approximately) – cut 3 strips of 2.5” each. You will be left with a strip 7.5” wide

2. From the 7.5” strip, first cut out the 3.5” square A.

3. Cut 2 more strips , 2.5” wide from this 7.5” strip. Put away the remaining 6^th strip (Should be 2.5” wide if you have been accurate in your cuttingJ. This is an extra in case something goes wrong)

4. So, now you have 5 strips 2.5” wide – 3 approximately 20” long and 2 approximately 15” long.

5. Cut the pieces as follows –

15.5 + 2.5

15.5 + 2.5

11.5 + 4.5

11.5 + 4.5

4.5 + 4.5 +2.5 + 2.5

Fence Fabric

1. Cut 4 strips 1.5” wide.

2. From the 4 strips, cut pieces as follows:

9.5 + 5.5 + 2.5

9.5 + 5.5 + 2.5

11.5 +3.5 + 2.5

11.5 + 3.5 + 2.5

Now you have all the pieces. Put together the jigsaw puzzle!
